An Overview of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)

NYSC is an acronym for the National Youth Service Corps. It is a scheme set up by the Nigerian government to involve Nigerian graduates in nation-building and the development of the country.

NYSC was created on May 22, 1973, as an avenue for the reconciliation, reconstruction, and rebuilding of the nation after the civil war.

Ahmadu Ali served as the first Director-General of the NYSC until 1975.

Although there is no military conscription in Nigeria, since 1973, graduates of universities and later polytechnics have been required to take part in the National Youth Service Corps programme for one year, which is known as the national service year.

It is a compulsory one-year service that Nigerian graduates would have to do in order to obey the clarion call to serve their country after the completion of a Bachelor’s degree (BSc) at a university or a Higher National Diploma (HND) at a polytechnic.

How Many Times Does "NYSC" Mobilise in a Year?

Registration and mobilisation of corps members are done in batches and, more recently, in streams.

Currently, NYSC mobilises graduates twice a year in two batches: Batch A and Batch B, subdivided into streams: Stream 1 and Stream 2.

What is the Maximum Age for "NYSC" in Nigeria?

The age limit for NYSC is "30 years," but after this age, any interested graduate who wishes to participate in the programme can still be allowed to do so. 

It is just the "grace age" for those who want to be exempt from the NYSC programme.

NYSC Orientation Camp Lasts for How Many Days?

NYSC orientation camp is a venue where corps members are trained for twenty-one (21) days (i.e., three weeks) before they are posted to their respective Place of Primary Assignment (PPA), where they will spend the remaining months and days and collect their NYSC certificates as evidence of serving their fatherland.

NYSC Orientation Camp Experience

The NYSC orientation camp experience is the first and most interesting experience for corps members. Some say it’s stressful but fun-filled. Many recently graduated Nigerian youths are always interested in serving their fatherland.

1. ABIA STATE

NYSC Abia State Short Code: AB

Address of the Abia State NYSC Orientation Camp

Abia State’s NYSC permanent orientation camp is located at Umunna, Bende local government area, Abia State.

Directions to the Abia State NYSC Orientation Camp

On your way to Umuahia, alight at the bus stop gate in Umuahia and board a cab going to Ohafia via Igbere. Tell the driver you are going to Igbere before Abriba. Once you alight at Igbere, which is just about 300 or 400 naira from Umuahia, cross to the other side of the road and walk straight to the orientation camp. 

Please, on no account, should you tell the driver that you're going to Bende, because that town is a bit far from Igbere, where your camp is located.

2. ADAMAWA STATE

3. AKWA IBOM STATE

From AKTC Park in Uyo, you might see a direct bus to the orientation camp, but if you don't, there's another way to get to the orientation camp without problem. Take a Keke Napep to a place called Plaza, walk down to Oron Road, and ask where they board Nsit Atai buses.

4. ANAMBRA STATE

Anambra State’s NYSC permanent orientation camp is located at Umuawulu/Mbaukwu, Awka South local government area, Anambra State.

Directions to the Anambra State NYSC Orientation Camp

Coming from Onitsha, go to upper Iweka and board a bus going to Awka. As soon as you enter the bus, don't forget to remind the driver or conductor that you'll be landing at the NYSC orientation camp in Umunya. When you get to Umunya, look for a bike man who'll take you into the orientation camp. 

The distance from Onitsha to Umunya is 20 to 40 minutes, and the total price might range from 300 to 500 naira. 

Coming from Awka, go to Unizik junction and board a bus going to Onitsha. As soon as you enter the bus, don't forget to remind the driver or conductor that you'll be landing at the NYSC orientation camp in Umunya. When you get to Umunya, look for a bike man who'll take you into the orientation camp. The distance from Awka to Umunya is 20 to 30 minutes, and the total price might range from 300 to 400 naira.

5. BAUCHI STATE

From the last bus stop in Bauchi, board a taxi to Muda Lawal Park, then take another bus going to Wailo from the park. The NYSC orientation camp is located in Wailo.

6. BAYELSA STATE

Get a bus going to Yenagoa and tell the driver to stop you at Mbiama (just before they enter Bayelsa). At Mbiama, you will see cabs going to Kaiama; join one and tell the driver you will alight at Kaiama Park. From Kaiama Park, take a direct bike ride to the orientation camp.

7. BENUE STATE

From Makurdi last bus stop, cross to the other side, and directly in front of Winners Chapel church, there are cars going to Gboko. From Gboko, you'll alight at the NYSC orientation camp just after the Police College by the roadside.

8. BORNO STATE

NYSC Borno State Short Code: BO

Borno State’s NYSC orientation camp is located at the College of Peace and Disaster Management, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Babbar-Ruga Batsari Road, Katsina, Katsina State.

9. CROSS RIVER STATE

NYSC Cross River State Short Code: CR

Cross River State’s NYSC permanent orientation camp is located at Obubra, Obubra local government area, Cross River State.

Directions to the Cross River State NYSC Orientation Camp

From Lagos and the south-western States, alight at Calabar and take a straight bus to Obubra. Tell them to stop you at Obubra junction and enter a bike for 150 to 200 naira straight to the NYSC orientation camp.

From Abuja, enter a Calabar bus and tell the driver that you'll be alighting at Obubra Junction. At Obubra junction, enter a bike for 150 to 200 naira and ride straight to the NYSC orientation camp.

From Onitsha, alight at Upper Iweka and enter Ikom Motor; tell the driver that you'll be alighting at Obubra Junction. From there, enter a bike for 150 to 200 naira and ride straight to the NYSC orientation camp.

10. DELTA STATE 

NYSC Delta State Short Code: DT

Delta State’s NYSC permanent orientation camp is located at the former Martins TTC, Issele-Uku, Aniocha North local government area, Delta State.

Directions to the Delta State NYSC Orientation Camp

For those coming to Delta from Lagos and the whole of the South West or Benin, enter the Asaba or Onitsha bus and tell the driver to drop you at the Issele-Uku junction. When you get to the junction, cross the motorway and board a bike straight to the orientation camp, which will cost from 100 to 150 naira. 

For those coming from Enugu and the whole of the South East, enter the Onitsha bus and alight at upper Iweka; from upper Iweka, enter the Asaba bus from 150 to 200 naira and alight at Koko Junction, which is the last bus stop, and from there you'll see the Issele-Uku bus. Enter the bus and alight at the Issele-Uku junction. When you get to the junction, cross the motorway and board a bike straight to the orientation camp, which will cost between 100 and 150 naira. The journey to Issele-Uku from Asaba is about 25 to 35 minutes.

11. EBONYI STATE

From Abakaliki, board a bus to Afikpo Macgregor Camp. Alight at the junction and board a straight bike to the orientation camp.

12. EDO STATE

13. EKITI STATE

From Ado-Ekiti, take a straight bus to the NYSC orientation camp located at Ise-Orun/Emure Ekiti. The price of the bus will be around 300 naira.

14. ENUGU STATE

NYSC Enugu State Short Code: EN

Directions to the Enugu State NYSC Orientation Camp

If you are coming from any part of Nigeria, please proceed to Enugu City. When you get to Enugu city, locate Holy Ghost Park, ask for vehicles going to Awgu, and board one of them straight to the orientation camp. 

Coming from the South, for instance, the Port Harcourt-Calabar axis, you don’t have to get to Enugu city; just board a bus heading to Enugu and inform the driver that you will be alighting at the Awgu NYSC orientation camp. Remind him again once you have passed Okigwe. 

Coming by air, board an airplane to the Enugu Airport. From the terminal, hire a cab straight to the orientation camp, or you can get to Holy Ghost Park and board a vehicle straight to the NYSC orientation camp. 

A second option by air is the Owerri Airport; from Owerri, proceed by road to Okigwe, and from Okigwe, you will easily get a cab to the Awgu NYSC orientation camp.

15. GOMBE STATE

NYSC Gombe State Short Code: GM

Gombe State’s NYSC orientation camp is located at the College of Technical Science, Amada, Km 21, Gombe-Bauchi highway, near the International Airport, Gombe State.

Directions to the Gombe State NYSC Orientation Camp

From Gombe Park, take a straight bus to the orientation camp. The orientation camp is located at the College of Technical Science, Amada, Km 21, Gombe-Bauchi highway, near the International Airport Gombe.

16. IMO STATE

NYSC Imo State Short Code: IM

Imo State’s NYSC orientation camp is located at Former Girl’s Model Secondary School, Eziama Obaire Nkwerre local government area, Imo State.

Directions to the Imo State NYSC Orientation Camp

Coming from Owerri, board a bus from Ama JK to Nkwerre. Make sure that you tell the driver that you're going to the NYSC orientation camp in Eziama Obaire Nkwerre, alight at Nkume Junction, and board a bike to the orientation camp. The distance from Owerri to the orientation camp is about 40 minutes to an hour, and the bus fare will range from 300 to 500 naira.

17. JIGAWA STATE

NYSC Jigawa State Short Code: JG

Jigawa State’s NYSC permanent orientation camp is located opposite the Army Barracks, Fanisua Dutse local government area, Jigawa State.

Directions to the Jigawa State NYSC Orientation Camp

From Kano, board a bus going to Dutse and tell the driver that you'll alight at the NYSC orientation camp in Fanisua; the journey will last for about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The orientation camp is located opposite an Army barracks.

18. KADUNA STATE

Kaduna State’s NYSC permanent orientation camp is located at Kaduna-Abuja Road, Kaduna State.

Directions to the Kaduna State NYSC Orientation Camp

From Kaduna city, board a bus going to Chikun local government; tell the driver that you're going to the NYSC orientation camp. The orientation camp is located on the Kaduna-Abuja expressway and costs 150 to 200 naira from the city.

19. KANO STATE

NYSC Kano State Short Code: KN

Kano State’s NYSC permanent orientation camp is located at Kusala Dam, Karaye local government area, Kano State.

Directions to the Kano State NYSC Orientation Camp

On your way to Kano State, tell the driver to drop you off at Unguwa Uku. When he stops, you'll see buses waiting to drop people off at Karaye camp at the rate of 500 to 700 naira.

But if the driver didn't stop you at Unguwa Uku, then alight at the final bus stop, Sabon-Gari Park at New Road, and board a Keke Napep to Bata for 50 to 100 naira; from there, find a bus to Kabuga Park; when you get to Kabuga Park, board a bus to Karaye Camp.

20. KATSINA STATE

NYSC Katsina State Short Code: KT

Katsina State’s NYSC orientation camp is located at the Multi-purpose Centre, Mani Road, Katsina State. 

Directions to the Katsina State NYSC Orientation Camp

Find your way to Kano. From Kano, board a bus going to Katsina. From the park in Katsina, you'll get a bike ride straight to the orientation camp, located on Mani Road.

21. KEBBI STATE

From Mando Park in Kaduna, get a vehicle going to Yauri/Kontagora, alight at Yauri. From Yauri, get another vehicle going to Koko. After alighting at Koko Junction, get a straight cab to the orientation camp located at Dakingari. 

From Ibadan, get a vehicle going to Kontagora, Niger State; alight at Kontagora, and get a vehicle going to Koko. After alighting at Koko Junction, get a straight cab to the orientation camp located at Dakingari.

22. KOGI STATE

24. LAGOS STATE

Find your way to Ikeja, Lagos. From Ikeja, board a bus to Iyana Ipaja; when you get to Iyana Ipaja, board a bus to Agege or Iyana Ipaja and tell the driver to stop you at the NYSC orientation camp. 

From Ojota, board a bus to Oshodi; from Oshodi, board a bus to Iyana Ipaja; and alight at their last bus stop, which is under a bridge. Take the road on the right where you were stopped and walk down straight, or ask people around the bus stop where the NYSC orientation camp is located, and they will direct you appropriately. 

From Oyingbo, board a bus going to Costain; when you get to Costain, board a bus to Ojuelegba; from Ojuelegba, board a bus going to Oshodi; from Oshodi, board a bus to Iyana Ipaja; and alight at their last bus stop, which is under a bridge. Take the road on the right where you were stopped and walk down straight; or ask people around the bus stop where the NYSC orientation camp is located, and they will direct you appropriately.

25. NASARAWA STATE 

NYSC Nasarawa State Short Code: NS

Nasarawa State’s NYSC orientation camp is located at Magaji Dan-Yamusa permanent orientation camp, Keffi, Nasarawa State.

Directions to the Nasarawa State NYSC Orientation Camp

From Abuja, board a bus and alight at Mararaba; take a 200-naira bus to Keffi; and tell the driver to stop you at the NYSC orientation camp.

26. NIGER STATE

Alternatively, find your way to Abeokuta. From Abeokuta, board a bus to Sagamu, when the bus stops, enter a bike and ride straight to the orientation camp. The journey from Abeokuta to Sagamu is close to an hour.

28. ONDO STATE

Find your way to Akure. From Akure, board a taxi to the Benin garage, where you'll see a vehicle going to Ikare. From the last bus stop, board a bike and ride straight to the orientation camp.

29. OSUN STATE

Find your way to Osogbo. From Osogbo, board a bus going to Ede. As soon as they stop you, look for a bike that'll take you straight to the NYSC orientation camp for the rate of 100 to 150 naira. 

From Lagos, Ibadan, Kogi, Abeokuta, or Abuja, look for a bus going to Osun State. Immediately you get to Ife or Ilesha, tell the driver that you'll alight at Gbogan, and from Gbogan, you will take a direct bus to the orientation camp, which is very close.

30. OYO STATE

Oyo State’s NYSC orientation camp is located at Government Technical College, Iseyin local government area, Iseyin, Oyo State.

From Iwo Road in Ibadan, board a taxi for 150 to 200 naira going to Ojoo, and tell the driver to drop you off at Iseyin Park. From Iseyin Park, board a bus going to the orientation camp for up to 800 to 1,000 naira and be prepared for a journey of more than two hours.

31. PLATEAU STATE

From Jos, take a straight bus to Mangu, where the orientation camp is located, for a rate of 500 naira. The journey will take 45 minutes to an hour.

32. RIVERS STATE

Rivers State’s NYSC orientation camp is located at Nonwa-Gbam Tai local government area, Rivers State.

When you get to Port Harcourt, alight at Eleme Junction, ask for directions to where the Nonwa or Gokana buses are loading, and board a bus to the orientation camp. Make sure you tell the driver that you're going to the orientation camp. The NYSC orientation camp is along the road. The journey is about an hour.

33. SOKOTO STATE

Sokoto State’s NYSC orientation camp is located at Wamakko, Wamakko local government area, Sokoto State.

Directions to the Sokoto State NYSC Orientation Camp

Find your way to Sokoto. From the park in Sokoto city, get a bike man and tell him to take you to Wamakko camp. It will cost you from 150 to 250 naira, and the orientation camp is located on the left side of the road.

34. TARABA STATE
